Call for Prose – Fiction and Nonfiction
Breadline Press is now accepting submissions for an anthology of West Coast prose, both fiction and nonfiction. By West Coast we include Washington State, Oregon, California, western Canada, western Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii. English language only, please (for now.) We are always willing to read non-qualifying works if they are well written, but our preferences lie with our neighbors. (You could always consider moving!)
- Please send previously unpublished works only. We will accept novel chapters if they are self contained.
- No particular word count required (though keep in mind that this is an anthology.)
- Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.
- Electronic submission only! Please submit in .doc, .docx, or .rtf formats, only. Include the text as an attachment with a cover letter. Include the word count in the cover letter, please, and a brief description of the work (fiction, essay, memoir, etc.)
- Email submissions to: breadlinepress@gmail.com
- Submissions must be received by August 15th, 2010 to be considered for this anthology.
- Payment for this project will be two copies of the anthology.
Thanks and good luck.

I’m a little unclear on the requirements of this anthology – do the submissions need to only be from people who are currently living on the West Coast, or are the stories supposed to be about the West Coast? I ask because I used to live in Portland, am probably moving back next year, and have some fiction set in Portland. (I love Portland
)

Just as Ezra Pound is considered an American poet, despite the fact that he escaped and fled to Europe, a former Portlander would still qualify as a northwest writer, in our eyes. We are hoping to showcase NW writers, regardless of what they write about, but a story set in the northwest by a former resident is certainly an acceptable submission.

Is there any sort of theme or genre that you are looking for? I don’t want to send in a story that won’t fit because of being too scary or outlandish.

There is no theme requirement; we are simply looking for excellent works from northwest authors. In other words, scare us if you like. We like the borderlands just as much as anything else.

Minakshi,
Please stay tuned for the next call for submissions; our requirements may change. The call will probably be issued by the end of the year.
